Five league titles across almost as many decades tell only part of it; the first came in 1997-98, but it was the 1999-2000 season that stands out, when Panathinaikos took the league and the Greek Cup in the same year under Yasemi Samantoura.

The women's section traces back to 1937, eighteen years after the men's game had already taken root at the club, and it remains the oldest women's basketball team in Greece. It carries the green and white and answers to "Prasines," the feminine form of the men's "Prasinoi," alongside the older nickname "Trifylli," the shamrock.

Titles have not arrived on a straight line. A fourth championship in 2012-13 and a fifth in 2020-21 sit either side of a harder stretch: relegation to the A2 division in 2017-18, reversed the following season when the team won A2 and returned to the top flight. The Greek Cup has come more recently and more often, won in 2022-23 and defended in 2023-24. In Europe, the club's best run came early, a Top 16 finish in the EuroLeague Women in 2000-01.

Games against Olympiacos carry a name of their own in Athens, the "Derby of the Eternal Enemies," sometimes called simply "the mother of battles."

The team plays out of the Nikos Galis Olympic Indoor Hall.

Samantoura's name runs through the club's biggest years, present for both the 1999-2000 double and the 2012-13 title. In 2024, the bench passed to Selen Erdem, the first foreign coach to take charge of the women's team in its history.
