Twice in the space of five seasons Slavia had Prague to itself in the Extraliga, winning the title in 2002/03 and again in 2007/08.
The club only became HC Slavia Praha in 1993. It settled into the Extraliga the following year and stayed there for two decades before the two championships arrived — and before relegation returned in 2015, since when Slavia has played in the Chance Liga.
Matches against Sparta Praha still carry more weight than the league table would suggest, the kind of derby where recent form barely matters once the two sides are on the same ice. Slavia's players wear the blue stitching that gave the club its nickname, Sešívaní, shared with the football side across town.
Jan Hejda came up through that academy before his career took him into the NHL, one of the names Slavia points to when the conversation turns to what the club's system has produced rather than what it has bought.
