The club made that second tier its home after winning the 2. Liga in 2018–2019.

The rise from Dolní Rychnov, set up in 1945 around the Falknov brown-coal mines, still shapes how the club is known: Baníkovci, the Miners, a name the mines gave it long before any name change did. Sokolov reached the Czechoslovak top division in 1978 for a single season, then again from 1989 to 1997.

Tomáš Vokoun came through the club, though Sokolov's identity has always leaned more on the mines than on any one name.
