Sola HK shares the Jæren region with Klepp HK, and matches between the two carry the weight of a local derby with no name attached to it, the kind where league position stops mattering. Sola have had less to celebrate against the bigger names further afield. Between 2017 and 2023 they reached five NM Cup finals and lost all five, four of them to Vipers Kristiansand and the first to Larvik HK. The REMA 1000-ligaen has followed a similar shape: bronze in four straight seasons from 2020/21 through 2023/24, then silver in 2024/25, the closest the club has come to a top-flight title.

The handball side traces back to Sola Turn og Idrettslag, founded on 1 May 1934 and renamed Sola Idrettslag in 1947; the department did not become its own club, Sola Håndballklubb, until 1 January 1995. They play in yellow and black at Åsenhallen, which holds 1,200.

No player has left a bigger mark on the place than Camilla Herrem. She is the club's all-time leading scorer with 167 goals in 167 appearances and was named the league's most valuable player in 2021/22, the kind of one-goal-a-game return that carried Sola through those bronze seasons. Hilde Østbø sits just behind her on the scoring list with 147 goals and played her way to fourth place with Norway at the 1996 Olympics. Between them, Tonje Nøstvold added 104 goals in a Sola shirt, though it is Herrem's name that comes up first whenever the club's history gets discussed.
