Tromsø Hockey spent last season at the bottom of the 1. divisjon and had to fight through a qualification round to keep its place there. Jimmy Komulainen, the coach who took the men's team back into the 1. divisjon, left the post in March 2026, so the side that starts the new campaign does so under someone else.

Getting to that level took a detour. For several years the men's team played not in the Norwegian pyramid but in the Swedish Division 3; Tromsø was one of only two Norwegian clubs to sit inside the Swedish league system at the time. The women's section took the more conventional route, winning promotion to the 1. divisjon in 2014 and reaching the Eliteserien for the 2016/17 season.

The club plays out of Tromsø Ishall, a rink that holds 500. Games between the two are billed locally as the Battle of the North. Money has been as much of an opponent as any team on the ice; in 2023 the retailer XXL picked Tromsø Hockey as the winner of its "Grow the Game" initiative, on 9 March 2004.

Through the promotion, the relegation battle and the coaching change, it is Komulainen's name attached to the climb back to the 1. divisjon that people in Tromsø bring up first.
