Váci NKSE Women

The bronze medal in the 2011–12 Magyar Kupa did not come from a club chasing history but from one that had already spent most of its life mid-table. Váci NKSE's best domestic finish remains second place in the NB I Championship in 2009–10, a season the city of Vác itself recorded in print as the high point of a club that has otherwise settled, four separate times, for third.

The handball played in Vác goes back to 1935, but the club as it now stands took shape only after Váci Forte SC merged with Terra SE Vác in 1996, a lineage the club traces even as outside records list 1948 as its founding year. What survived the merger was a squad built largely around goalkeepers: Blanka Böde-Bíró came through at Váci NKSE before moving on to win Champions League silver with Ferencváros, one of the clearer signs that the club has functioned as a proving ground as much as a destination.

European runs have followed a similar pattern — quarter-finals in the Cup Winners' Cup in 2003–04 and again in 2012–13, and a further last-eight finish in the EHF Cup in 2010–11, each time stopping short of the semi-final. Domestically, the closest thing to genuine needle comes against Ferencvárosi TC and Moyra-Budaörs, fixtures the club's own supporters call "rangadó" rather than ordinary league games.

Home matches are played in front of 700 people at the Városi Sportcsarnok, a hall that keeps the club's ceiling low by design rather than accident. Váci NKSE heads into the current season looking, as ever, for the kind of run that turns a quarter-final into something further.
