Vasas Women

Angyalföld built its identity on the factory floor — the Vas- és Fémmunkások district, the ironworkers and metalworkers whose sports club took their trade into its name. Handball at Vasas grew out of that same ground: the section folded once in 1931 when the money ran out, and came back in 1938 before a second rebirth in 1960, when the Angyalföldi Sportiskola gave the team the identity it still carries — Vasas-ASI.

What followed was two decades in which Vasas simply did not lose the league. The high point came in 1982, when Vasas won the European Champions Cup.

Marianna Nagy played through the middle of that era, from 1980 to 1986, and picked up the 1982 European title along with the domestic sweep. She went on to become Hungary's most capped international, with 281 appearances and 1,207 goals for the national team.

Vasas now play out of the Sterbinszky Amália Kézilabdacsarnok, a 600-seat hall.
