Nordderby weekends have a different pitch to them in Vechta: EWE Baskets Oldenburg travel down the road, and for two hours the town's usual quiet around the Rasta Dome disappears. The rivalry sits on top of a club that started as a school team, put together by former pupils of the Antonianum Gymnasium and named after a Bob Marley record playing in the background the day the founders picked a name — Rastaman Vibration gave them "Rasta" before it gave them anything resembling a first team.

That gap between name and ambition closed slowly. Three ProA titles, in 2012–13, 2017–18 and 2022–23, mark the points when Vechta forced its way into the Basketball Bundesliga rather than settling into the second tier. The high point came in 2018–19, when a fourth-place finish under Pedro Calles sent the club into the play-offs for the first time; Vechta beat Brose Bamberg in the quarter-finals before Bayern Munich stopped the run in the semis. Two spells in the Basketball Champions League followed, in 2019–20 and 2024–25, both ending in the group stage.

The club has leaned on its own academy rather than the transfer market to stay competitive. The Basket-Akademie Rasta Vechta, running since 2013, produced Philipp Herkenhoff, who went on to play for the German national team having come through Vechta's own ranks, and Lamin Sabally alongside him.

None of it changes what still fills the Rasta Dome fastest: an Oldenburg fixture, orange and black against the neighbours, in an arena that seats barely 3,140 and rarely has a seat spare when they meet.
