Sporting CP

The last of Sporting's three Taça da Liga triumphs, in 2026, came after the club had already made the Taça de Portugal something close to a habit again. That run of silverware belongs to a different era from the one that built the club's early reputation, when Sporting collected nine Portuguese league titles between 1954 and 1982 and stood among the country's dominant sides. What sits between those two spells of success is a gap the club does not talk around: the basketball section shut down in 1995, after members voted in a referendum to keep handball instead during a financial crisis. Youth and women's teams came back first, in 2012, and it took until 2019 for the senior men to return to the Liga Portuguesa de Basquetebol.

Since then Sporting have rebuilt quickly rather than steadily, winning a league title again in 2021. On court, Travante Williams became part of the story in a different way, taking Portuguese citizenship and going on to play for the national team.

The club still carries the Lions nickname across all of Sporting's sports, and green, white and black on court.
