The Liga Portuguesa de Basquetebol, currently operating under the sponsor name Liga Betclic, serves as the premier professional men's basketball competition in Portugal. It occupies the highest position in the national hierarchy, sitting above the second-tier Proliga. The league operates as a closed system for top professional clubs, distinguishing itself from the Taça de Portugal, which is a knockout tournament open to lower-division teams in its early stages.
Organised by the Federação Portuguesa de Basquetebol, the competition traces its origins to the 1932–33 season. A significant structural shift occurred during the 2008–09 campaign when the federation reassumed direct control after the previous organiser, the Liga de Clubes de Basquetebol, collapsed due to financial difficulties. The current format involves twelve clubs contesting a 22-game double round-robin regular season. The top eight sides advance to a playoff phase featuring quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals, with series usually decided by best-of-five matches.
SL Benfica stands as the most successful entity in the league’s history, holding 31 titles. FC Porto follows with 13 championships, while Sporting CP has secured nine. The reigning champion of the 2024–25 season is SL Benfica, who defeated FC Porto in the playoff final. The structure includes direct promotion and relegation with the Proliga; typically, the bottom two teams descend while the top two from the lower division ascend. Historical records include Benfica’s perfect 100% win rate in the regular season during the 2008–09 season.
The competition remains distinct from other domestic cups through its focus on a league-based format for established professional entities. It continues to function under the governance of the national governing body, which also oversees the international team and other domestic competitions. The league system ensures that the strongest clubs compete against each other regularly, with the playoffs determining the ultimate title holder each year.
