Rui Marreiros is the name that follows Portimonense onto the court, and Rita Marreiros carries it through the women's side.

The basketball section did not exist when the parent club, Portimonense Sporting Clube, was founded on 14 August 1914; it grew out of activity that had been going on informally since the early 1950s and was only put on a proper footing in the 1959-60 season, under António Feu. The men's team took the first Algarve regional title in 1964-65, the women some eleven years later, in 1975-76.

The men answered in 2020-21 with the Campeonato Nacional 1.ª Divisão, and followed it with the Troféu António Pratas two seasons later. The club now sits in the Proliga, the second tier, after spells in the top-flight LPB.

Home games are played in front of no more than 450 people at the Pavilhão Municipal da Boavista, a gap that against Farense or Olhanense in the Algarve derby gets filled early. Diogo Bessa, an academy product, is the kind of name that gap tends to produce.
