Póvoa play in the Liga Placard, the top flight of Portuguese basketball, and the men's team has been there only since the summer of 2021. They won the Proliga Championship that year and were promoted for the first time in the club's history. By 2023/24 they had made the Final Four of the Portuguese Cup (Taça de Portugal), a run described as unprecedented in Portuguese basketball.

Basketball was not why the club existed. Clube Desportivo da Póvoa was founded in 1944 as a multi-sport club, and the basketball section came 27 years later, in the 1971/72 season, under Armando Frias. The section spent decades below the top tier before the Proliga title.

The women's team has moved up too, reaching the 1st Division Nacional after promotion from the second division. Away from the league, the club has won the Hospital da Luz Trophy tournament five times.

The club anthem sings of blue and white worn on the chest, "the most beautiful colours".
