Anadia FC knows the feeling from the other end of a CAB Madeira final: beaten 70-63 in 1996, the first time the Funchal club lifted the Taça de Portugal. That defeat opened a run that has kept repeating itself on the Portuguese Cup final scoresheet ever since.

CAB Madeira, formed as Clube Amigos do Basquete in Funchal in 1979, built its name entirely on the women's side of the game. Seven Portuguese Cup titles and five national league championships have made it the most decorated club in the history of Portuguese women's basketball, and the cup finals read almost as a rivalry of their own: after beating Nacional da Madeira twice around the turn of the millennium and Boa Viagem twice more in the mid-2000s.

The club plays in red and white out of the Pavilhão Clube Amigos do Basquete, a ground that holds 680 people — small enough that a cup final at home feels close to a home match for every player on the floor. A regional trophy followed in 2016, the Taça Vítor Hugo, won against Vagos once again.

Ask around Funchal about the club and the conversation tends to circle back to Nacional da Madeira, the crosstown name that has stood on the losing side of finals against CAB more often than anyone else.
