Lusitânia's meetings with S.C. Angrense have a name of their own, the Derby Angrense.

The parent club dates from 24 June 1922, when it opened as the 14th delegation of Sporting Clube de Portugal. It answers to several names: Os Verdes Campeões, Leões, Verdes, and Lusitânia dos Açores.

The basketball section has had two lives. It won the Portuguese League Cup (Taça da Liga) in 2006-07, then went through a period of inactivity. It was reactivated for 2009/10 and took the Proliga, the second division, in that same season.

John Huggins, named most valuable player in 2012-13, is the import the club still talks about. At the centenary in 2022 the club honoured Mário Lino. Lusitânia also runs its youth teams through five nuclei in local schools, which is how the club reaches children in Angra do Heroísmo.

Home is the municipal pavilion in Angra do Heroísmo, with 1,326 seats, in the Azores.
