«Cruzmaltino»
Nenê, born Maybyner Hilário, played for Vasco da Gama from 1999 to 2002 and then left for the NBA. The club's two Brazilian championships, in 2000 and 2001, both fall inside those years. It took the South American Clubs' Champions Cup (Campeonato Sul-Americano de Clubes Campeões) in 1998 and 1999, then the Liga Sul-Americana in 1999 and 2000.
Rio has been the steadier stage. Vasco has won the Campeonato Carioca sixteen times. The first title came in 1946, and the club took four in a row from 1978 to 1981. The most recent came in 2001, the same year as the second national title.
Home is the São Januário complex, in a gymnasium named after Cyro de Sousa Aranha that holds 2,500. Fans call the team Cruzmaltino, after the Maltese cross on the crest, and sometimes Camisas Negras, the Black Shirts.
No Brazilian championship has followed the one in 2001. The most recent national trophy, in 2016, came in the second division, the Liga Ouro.
