In the autumn of 1994 a basketball club from a village in the Anadia municipality drew Manchester Giants in the first round of the Korać Cup.

The gap lasted 26 years. The Campeonato Nacional da 1.ª Divisão went to Sangalhos in 2001-02 and again in 2002-03, both titles falling inside those years away from the top division, the Liga Portuguesa de Basquetebol (LPB). In 2003-04 they reached the Proliga final and lost it.

Sangalhos Desporto Clube, also known as Aliança Sangalhos, dates from 1 January 1940. It plays in blue and white in the Complexo Desportivo de Sangalhos, which holds 500 people. Cedric Miller, an American, played there in 1984-85.

The return to the LPB came in 2022. Malik Marquetti, João Martinho, Steven Julian and João Neves were the players who carried the side back up. The club now plays regional derbies again. Illiabum Clube are the other side in the regional derby.
