Dinis Amaral was still coach when Galomar beat Portimonense 2-0 in the Proliga final in 2023, sending Caniço's basketball club into the Liga Portuguesa de Basquetebol for the first time. The Proliga is the Portuguese second division, and the promotion capped a run that had already produced two regional titles, in 2017 and 2018, in the Campeonato Regional da Madeira.

The parent association was set up on the island in 2000 as a squash club; basketball came later, in 2010, and it is that section, not the original one, that carries the club into the top flight. The nickname Galo, Rooster, comes straight from the name Galomar.

Madeira has one other name in the conversation: CAB Madeira, based on the same island. There is no name yet for the fixture between them, but there does not need to be one for it to matter — an island with two clubs in national basketball has, one way or another, a derby.
