Académica de Coimbra won the Liga Portuguesa de Basquetebol (LPB) in 1948-49 and again in 1949-50, in the years when Galitos Barreiro was the side they measured themselves against. The men won the league four times in all, the last in 1958-59. They added the Portuguese Cup in 1957-58, 1966-67 and 1970-71.

The women's section did more with the same colours. Across the three seasons from 1967-68 to 1969-70 it won both the league and the Portuguese Cup every year. It finished with six league titles, the last in 1975-76.

The basketball section dates from 1 September 1902 and sits inside the Coimbra student association, formed in 1887. That explains a nickname other than the familiar Briosa : the team is also called Estudantes. It plays in blue and white, and under its sponsor's name it appears as AAC Efapel. The Pavilhão Multidesportos Dr. Mário Mexia, built in 2003 as the Pavilhão Multiusos de Coimbra, seats 2,239.

From the modern era, the international the club can point to is Fernando Sousa, who played for Portugal in the qualifiers for EuroBasket 2009.
