Benfica lost to Illiabum 71-69 in the 1992 Supertaça de Portugal, and lost again, 91-83, in the Taça de Portugal final on 18 March 2018. The second result gave a club from Ílhavo its first Portuguese Cup, two years after it had won promotion from the Proliga for the second time.

Illiabum began on 1 December 1943, when 11 friends in Ílhavo set it up. In its early years it was tied to football, and basketball only later became its sole activity. The name is Latin and stands for the town itself.

Europe came late. In 1999-2000 the club made its international debut in the Saporta Cup and beat the Macedonian side KK Rabotnički. The Proliga is where the club has spent much of its time. It won that league in 2007-08 and again in 2015-16, and each title took it up to the top flight, the Liga Portuguesa de Basquetebol (LPB). It also won the Proliga's own trophy, the Troféu António Pratas, in 2008-09, 2011-12 and 2015-16.

The cup win was followed by a bad stretch. In 2019-20 financial problems sent the club back down to the Proliga. It went down again in 2021-22, when it lost a playoff against Vitória SC.

Miguel Queiroz is the player most often mentioned from these years. He arrived from FC Barreirense together with Tiago Raimundo, played for the Portuguese national team, and went back to FC Porto, where he is now captain.

Illiabum now plays in the Proliga, the second division, at the 700-seat Pavilhão Capitão Adriano Nordeste. About 250 athletes train in its youth system.
