Ovarense

The club now competes in the Portuguese League (LPB) alongside the Taça de Portugal and the Taça da Liga.

The basketball section dates to 1970, set up by the entrepreneur João Gonçalves inside a multi-sport association that had existed since well before the war. Between 1988 and 2008, Ovarense won the Portuguese Championship five times.

The Super Cup has been won eight times, more than any other domestic trophy in the club's collection, spread from 1988 through to 2008 rather than clustered in a single golden run.

Home games are played at the Arena de Ovar, also known as Pavilhão João Gonçalves after the man who started it all, holding 3,000 for what is regularly a sell-out crowd on the nights that matter. The team plays in black, red and white, and is known locally as the Vareiros, a nickname that ties the club directly to the town of Ovar rather than to any sponsor or era.

For a club with that record in the cabinet, the current task is straightforward: string together the kind of run in the League and the Taça de Portugal that once was routine, and stop being a side people remember mainly for what it did before 2010.
