Deportivo Maipú and Patronato played out a goalless draw in the Primera Nacional's Regular Season, round 28, on Saturday evening. The hosts controlled territory and possession but could not break through. By then it was clear the match would be decided by moments, not possession figures.
Maipú's S. Paulini picked up a yellow card in the 30th minute, followed by F. Heredia for Patronato at 32. Neither side pushed hard for a breakthrough, and here's the thing — the intensity never really built. There was no value left at that number when neither team threatened.
Coaches made their changes. B. Bravo came on for Maipú at 46, L. Cabrera at 54, and D. Diaz at 59. Both sides doubled their substitutions at 64 with T. Silva and J. Vera for Maipú. The game settled into a rhythm of passing and repositioning, nothing more.
Further changes followed: J. Salas and F. Heredia off for Maipú at 77, A. Sosa booked for Patronato at 80. G. Diaz and J. de la Reta with M. Bonfigli completed the reshuffle at 89. Maipú played in driving rain at times, but the rain did not change the outcome.
The statistics tell a story of dominance without reward. Maipú had 149 attacks to Patronato's 79, 71 per cent possession against 29, four shots on target to one. They pinned them back for long spells but gifted Patronato chances they never took. Many shots with one goal means chances went begging — though Patronato's single shot on target was the only one that mattered.
Maipú sit eighth with 27 points from 27 games, five wins and eleven defeats. Patronato are sixteenth with 28 points, 13 draws and nine losses. The result keeps them apart by a single point, and there is no gap to speak of in a league where draws accumulate.
We had tipped a home win at 58 per cent confidence. The prediction did not materialise. Maipú carried the side through possession but could not spring a surprise when it counted. The match decided itself in three or four moments, and none belonged to the hosts.
