IF Gnistan lost 0:1 to KuPS in the Veikkausliiga on Saturday evening. The visitors took the lead in the second minute through S. Savolainen and held on for a hard-fought victory. The result keeps KuPS at the summit of the table while Gnistan remain in fourth place.
It was an early strike that set the tone for the match. Savolainen's goal came before Gnistan could settle into their rhythm, and by then the hosts were playing catch-up. There were no other chances of note in the opening exchanges, just a yellow card for A. Akinyemi on the fifth minute.
KuPS controlled the tempo for much of the contest, though Gnistan were not without their moments. The hosts won more aerial duels — 16 to 11 — and created four big chances of their own. But they found no answer to KuPS's efficiency, converting five big chances into a single goal.
The second half brought a series of changes from both sides. Gnistan brought on J. Latonen in the 57th minute, followed by Marcelo Costa and C. Antwi in the 63rd and 69th. KuPS responded with the introduction of B. Armah in the 78th minute, and then A. Jouhi and T. Jyry late on.
The statistics tell a story of possession without control. KuPS had 59 per cent of the ball and completed 458 passes, while Gnistan managed 41 per cent and 298. The hosts registered eight shots on target against seven for the visitors, yet the scoreline reflected the quality of the chances rather than the volume.
KuPS move two points clear at the top with 43 points from 22 games. Gnistan sit on 36 points, their last win coming on 26 July against Inter Turku. The gap remains, and for now the visitors fancy their chances of holding on to first place.
