Jonava fall to late penalty as Žalgiris II snatch victory

Kauno Žalgiris II beat Jonava 2-1 in the 1 Liga regular season on Thursday, a result that leaves the hosts still rooted in 14th place while Jonava remain ten spots above them. The match was decided by three goals spread across different phases, and by then the visitors had already seen their lead slip away. And here's the thing — it wasn't a game of momentum so much as timing. The opening came early, in the fifth minute, when A. Kabosius fired Žalgiris II ahead. That goal set the tone for the first half, and to be fair the hosts controlled more of the territory without necessarily creating the clearest chances. Jonava responded with a goal of their own in the 63rd minute through I. Gambo, which shifted the balance entirely. What followed was a matter of minutes rather than minutes lost. A. Uzkurnys stepped up for a penalty in the 67th minute and converted, putting Žalgiris II back in front for good. The visitors had hit the target five times to the hosts' three, yet the scoreline told a different story. By then the match had become about who struck when it mattered. The statistics tell one version; the match told another. Žalgiris II held 58 per cent possession and launched 94 attacks compared to Jonava's 87, but the visitors registered five shots on target against just three. Nine corners to three is another gap, and it shows who pressed forward more aggressively. Two yellow cards for the hosts against one for Jonava suggests the visitors felt the pressure in different ways. In the table Žalgiris II sit 14th with 16 points from 22 games, while Jonava occupy 10th with 27 points from 23 matches. The hosts have lost 16 of 22, a record that does not change in a single afternoon, but this result means they avoid another defeat streak. Jonava's six draws from 23 games show they can grind out results, and this loss brings that run to an end.
