Kauno Žalgiris II

FK Kauno Žalgiris II is the part of the structure nobody watches for its own sake — a squad assembled to move players from academy football into the first-team dressing room, registered in its current form in 2017, three years before FM Spyris, the club it serves, had even finished becoming Kauno Žalgiris under that name.

The reserves work out of the Nacionalinės futbolo akademijos stadionas, the national football academy's training ground in Kaunas, a venue built for exactly this kind of football rather than for crowds — it holds 1,500. There is no gate revenue to chase and no terrace culture to maintain; the point of the fixture list is what it teaches the players filling it.

The one season worth naming is 2019, when the team won the II Lyga's Southern Zone with 19 wins from 24 league games and only three defeats, earning promotion. It was a third-tier title, not a national one, but it validated the whole point of running a reserve side — proof that players coming through were ready for a tougher league. The same year, in the Cup, Kauno Žalgiris B ran into their own first team and went out on penalties in the last sixteen, the kind of draw that only happens to a club with two versions of itself in the same competition.

There is no rivalry of note attached to a farm team playing in front of empty stands at a training centre — except the one built into its own name. Share a city and a badge with a senior side, and the fixture that matters most is never against an opponent; it is the one that decides who gets called up and who stays behind in Kaunas.
