About

TOPsport Pirma Lyga stands as the second tier of professional football in Lithuania, situated directly below the A Lyga. Established by the Lithuanian Football Federation in 1923, the competition has undergone significant structural changes since Lithuania restored its independence in 1991. The league is organized as a double round-robin format, requiring each of the sixteen participating clubs to play every opponent twice within the season.

Athletic movement between divisions is governed by strict rules. The champion secures automatic promotion to the top flight, while the runner-up enters a two-legged play-off against the second-to-last team from the A Lyga. At the opposite end of the table, the bottom two clubs are automatically relegated to the II Lyga, with the third-from-bottom squad facing a play-off against the third-placed team from the third tier. Reserve teams from the A Lyga are permitted to compete but remain ineligible for promotion to ensure competitive integrity.

Organizational control shifted from the national federation to the Association of Lithuanian Football Clubs (aLFKS) in 2022. The competition currently carries the sponsorship title TOPsport Pirma Lyga, a brand adopted in 2024 following previous iterations including Optibet Pirma Lyga. The league serves as a semi-professional developmental tier, offering a pathway for clubs and young talents to reach the fully professional A Lyga, which is set to be rebranded as the Toplyga for the 2026 season.

Historical dominance in the modern era belongs to Lietava Jonava, now known as FK Jonava, which claimed three titles between 1998 and 2015. Recent success has been held by FK Transinvest, who secured victories in both 2023 and 2025. Current participants include Atmosfera, Babrungas Plungė, Be1 NFA, BFA, Dainava, Ekranas Panevėžys, and others vying for position in the demanding two-tier system.
