Kilmarnock and Heart of Midlothian shared the points in a Championship seventh-round fixture that defied expectations. The hosts took the lead through an own goal before Hearts equalised through Stephen Kingsley's late effort. We had backed the visitors, but this match had other ideas.
Laurent Mendy thought he had given Hearts the advantage on 13 minutes, but the goal was cancelled by VAR. Jamie McCart then turned the ball into his own net on 16 minutes, and Kilmarnock held their nerve through a spell where they were left exposed. Kingsley ended a barren spell with an 86th-minute goal that got over the line after the hosts had dallied on the ball in transition.
There were plenty of changes as both managers reshuffled their options. The statistics tell a familiar story. Hearts enjoyed 67 per cent possession and created four big chances, yet shots accuracy sat at just 18 per cent. Kilmarnock managed only 33 per cent of the ball and failed to register a single shot on target, four attempts landing inside the penalty area. Many shots with one goal means chances went begging for the visitors, while the hosts paid for a sloppy opening that cost them the lead.
The result leaves Kilmarnock in 12th place with five points from seven games, one win, two draws and four defeats. Hearts remain second on 13 points after four victories and two losses. The draw brought them together early in the standings, but the gap of eight points suggests both teams are running out of games to recover ground.
