Uefa fines Red Star Belgrade over Mladic chants

Uefa fined Red Star 90,000 euros and banned away fans for one match after supporters honoured convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic during a Plzeň defeat.

Uefa has fined Red Star Belgrade 90,000 euros after their travelling support chanted the name of Ratko Mladic during last month's Conference League tie away to Viktoria Plzeň.

Fans unfurled a banner praising Mladic and saluted him as the Serbian champions went down 5-1 on 27 August. Mladic, convicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia and serving a life sentence for genocide, died in The Hague at the age of 84 on the day of the match.

Uefa's ruling, issued late on Friday, covers breaches including inappropriate chanting and "racist and/or discriminatory behaviour". Red Star are barred from selling tickets to their own supporters for their next away fixture in European competition, against Lugano in the Conference League. A second away ticket ban has been suspended for a two-year probationary period.

The 1991 European champions have faced Uefa disciplinary action before, including sanctions over racist abuse directed at Roma people.

The suspended sanction means any repeat offence within the next two years would trigger an immediate away ticket ban on top of whatever penalty follows.
