Beşiktaş Rout Marseille 4-1, Genesio Under Pressure
Goals from Cerny, Murillo and Poku sank Marseille in Istanbul, a fourth straight loss that leaves Genesio's job in doubt before PSG visit.
Marseille's opening night in the Europa League turned into a rout. Beşiktaş beat them 4-1 in Istanbul, and the defeat leaves Bruno Genesio's position under scrutiny.
Marseille have now lost four matches in a row across competitions. In Ligue 1 they sit 13th with three points after three straight defeats, and this result does nothing to ease the pressure before Sunday's visit of Paris Saint-Germain to the Vélodrome in the fifth round.
İlhan Fakılı put the home side ahead after 15 minutes with a low, angled shot. That is where the resistance ended.
Genesio's side collapsed after the break. Vaclav Cerny put Beşiktaş back in front in the 56th minute, and Amir Murillo, a defender who joined the Turkish side in February and has now scored four times, made it 3-1 three minutes later. Ernest Poku, on Beşiktaş's books since August without a goal until now, added the fourth in the 81st minute.
Marseille return to Europa League action on 15 October, at home to Olympiacos. A run of four defeats without a win, and a home game against PSG just three days off, makes that fixture arrive at an awkward moment for Genesio.
