Achraf Hakimi to stand trial on rape charge after appeal fails

France's Court of Cassation confirmed on Wednesday that Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi will stand trial on a rape charge, leaving him with no further appeal. The country's highest court rejected the appeal his lawyers had lodged against the Versailles Court of Appeal's ruling of 19 June, which was handed down during the World Cup.

Hakimi, 27, was born in Madrid and plays for Morocco. The complaint comes from a young woman who went to his home in Boulogne-Billancourt, on the outskirts of Paris, in 2023. He has always denied the allegation.

The trial will be heard by a criminal court in the Hauts-de-Seine department, possibly in Nanterre. No date has been set.

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé may be called as a witness. His testimony was put forward by Hakimi's defence in an attempt to show that the encounter was consensual.

The complainant's lawyer, Rachel-Flore Pardo, sent a statement to the EFE agency: "Pardo said."

Pardo added that her client hopes the proceedings "will help other women and further break down the fortress of denial and impunity around sexual violence, including in professional football".
