Charles Mariano Aránguiz Sandoval

Few Chilean midfielders have made a single stoppage-time header carry as far as Charles Aránguiz's late winner against Uruguay did. He made his debut for the senior team on 4 November 2009, against Paraguay in Talcahuano, and went on to become one of the more durable figures in the squad, passing a hundred caps and eight thousand minutes in a red shirt, with goals spread across World Cup qualifiers, a World Cup finals, friendlies and, three times, the Copa América.

His club path started at Cobresal and Quilmes before Colo-Colo, but the move that changed the trajectory of his career came in 2011, when Universidad de Chile signed him. From there, Internacional and Udinese followed on undisclosed terms, and in 2015 Bayer Leverkusen paid £8.6 million for him. He wore the number 20 through much of that spell in Germany.

Now back at Universidad de Chile, Aránguiz returns to the club where his career took its decisive turn, still operating in central midfield at an age when many of his positional contemporaries have already stepped away from the top flight.
