Dodi Lukebakio

Dodi Lukebakio is defined less by a single goal than by a decision he spent years walking back. Unable to sort out foreign-player paperwork during his loan at Toulouse, he chose at 19 to represent the Democratic Republic of Congo rather than Belgium. The choice drew criticism at home, and in July 2024 he apologised publicly, calling it selfish and pointing to humanitarian work he had since carried out in Congo. He returned to the Belgian fold and has since won 33 caps and scored six goals for the senior side.

His club career began at Anderlecht, where loan spells at Toulouse and Charleroi did more for his development than his 17 appearances for the first team. A €5m move to Watford in January 2018 brought a single senior appearance before he was loaned straight back out, this time to Fortuna Düsseldorf. There he found his level, scoring ten goals in 31 Bundesliga matches and being named the division's rookie of the month in December 2018.

Hertha BSC paid €20m for him in 2019, and he stayed four seasons, contributing 24 goals in 94 games either side of a loan at Wolfsburg. Sevilla brought him to Spain in 2023 for €10m; a ligament injury in March 2024 cost him twelve matches, though he returned to score against Almería.

A left ankle fracture picked up on international duty against Liechtenstein in November 2025 required surgery and kept him out for months, a blow both to Benfica and to José Mourinho.
