Fabian Pekrul

Fabian Pekrul's career has taken him across an ocean and back to the same club he started at. After finishing with SC Verl's under-19 side in 2018 and moving on to the club's reserve team, SC Verl II, he left German football altogether: between 2019 and 2021 he kept goal for the Life Running Eagles, the college side of Life University in the United States.

College football in America runs on a different calendar and a different logic to the German lower leagues — short seasons, a student roster, a competition structure with no promotion or relegation attached to it. Pekrul spent two years inside that system before returning to the club that had produced him.

The route back ran through Verl's own structure rather than through a transfer market. He rejoined the senior set-up and was formally registered with the first team on 1 July 2023. It is the only senior professional squad he has belonged to; outside the various teams carrying the Verl name — the under-19s, the reserves, the first team — there is nothing else on his record.

That makes him an unusually undivided case in a position where movement is the norm. Goalkeepers tend to accumulate clubs, chasing the one shirt available at each of them. Pekrul's list has one entry, otherwise unbroken since his teens. He is a product of the club in the literal sense.
