Imanol Segovia

Imanol Segovia's career has run through operating rooms as often as through pitches. A serious knee injury interrupted his loan spell at Elche Ilicitano in Spain in 2022, when a torn cruciate ligament in his right knee, suffered in only his fifth match there, put him under the knife and out for a long stretch. He returned to Racing Club once the loan ended, but the road back to fitness took him through two further loan spells in Argentine football, first at Talleres de Córdoba and then, briefly, at Independiente Rivadavia.

Before the injury derailed things, Segovia had already made his mark with Racing Club in continental competition: he made his professional debut in a Copa Libertadores match against São Paulo in August 2021, a season in which the club went on to lift that trophy, though his personal part in the run to the final was never spelt out in detail.

Born in Posadas, Segovia came up through Racing's youth ranks before joining the first team in 2020. His path since leaving Racing has taken him from Deportivo Armenio in Argentina to Club Guaraní in Paraguay, where he arrived on a loan with an option to buy in January 2026. That move coincided with a change of national identity: Segovia obtained Paraguayan citizenship that same month, opening the door to full international recognition rather than the youth-level Argentina caps he had picked up earlier in his career. In May 2026, he was named in Paraguay's preliminary 55-man squad for the World Cup, although he has not yet made an appearance for the senior national team.

At Club Guaraní, Segovia plays as a central defender wearing the number 2 shirt, a right-footer whose career has so far been defined less by trophies of his own than by rebuilding after setbacks and by the late twist of a change in footballing nationality.
