About the player
João Cruz joined Athletico Paranaense's academy at the age of 12, working his way through the club's youth ranks before signing his first professional contract in December 2022. He extended that deal in June 2024, tying him to the club through February 2028.
His first-team debut came on 8 May 2024 in the Copa Sudamericana against Deportivo Rayo Zuliano. Four months later he had his defining moment: brought on as a substitute for the injured Bruno Zapelli, Cruz scored the only goal of the quarter-final tie against Racing Club, sending Athletico Paranaense through in the competition.
He has not yet featured for Brazil's senior national side, though he has represented the country at under-17 and under-20 level.
