About the player
Julio Ortiz's path to Portland ran through nine years and nine clubs across Ecuador and Uruguay before Independiente del Valle sold him north for roughly $1.5m in January 2025. He started out in the youth ranks at Universidad Católica, then spent time at San Antonio and Deportivo Quito and Cumbayá.
The move that shaped his career came in 2022, when LDU Quito sold him on to Independiente del Valle for around €450,000. At Independiente he settled into the midfield role that would define him, before the Timbers came in for him.
Before that stretch, his rise had its slower stages: two seasons at Deportivo Cuenca, a spell at Clan Juvenil, then two years at Delfín.
Ortiz has also worn the Ecuador shirt, called up for nine appearances for the national team since 2021, though he has yet to score at that level.
He now plays for Portland Timbers in MLS, standing 177cm.
