At Grêmio's academy they called him "Pivete de Aço" . José Guilherme de Lima Costa, known to almost everyone as Zé Guilherme , came through that academy in Porto Alegre and made his senior debut for the club in February 2024, appearing across the Campeonato Gaúcho, Série A and the Copa Libertadores in the same year. Most of his football that season was still played a level below: 21 matches and four goals for the under-20 side. He finished 2024 with a Campeonato Gaúcho winners' medal.

Then came the move that took him north. On 16 January 2025 he signed for Bahia , who paid 6.3 million reais for 80 per cent of his economic rights. He was registered with Bahia's under-20 squad at first, but was pulled up to train with the first team within weeks.

Nine appearances in the 2025 season, four of them from the start and five off the bench, with no goals and no assists. By April 2026 he had added six Série A matches, four as a starter, again without a goal or an assist.

He has not been called up by the senior national side.
