About the player

In the World Cup quarter-final against France in 2023, Mackenzie Arnold saved three penalties in the shoot-out and sent Australia into a semi-final for the first time. She was named Player of the Match, and was shortlisted for the FIFA Best Women's Goalkeeper award that year.

She came up through Burleigh Heads and Robina City on the Gold Coast before turning professional with Perth Glory in 2011. The next few years were unsettled: ten matches at Perth, ten at Canberra United, three at Western Sydney Wanderers, then a return to Perth for two seasons and 22 appearances. She won the W-League Premiership with Perth in 2014 and again with Brisbane Roar in 2017–18, and was named the league's Goalkeeper of the Year three times. A 2018 spell at Arna-Bjørnar in Norway brought 15 matches. A 2019 move to Chicago Red Stars brought none.

Her longest stay was in England. Arnold joined West Ham United as a free agent from Brisbane in July 2020, played 75 matches, captained the side in 2023–24 and was voted the club's Women's Hammer of the Year that season.

Before all that came the setback she has spoken about publicly. Returning from a knee ligament injury, and after a poor qualifier against Vietnam, she was left as third-choice goalkeeper for the Tokyo Olympics — the lowest point of her career, as she later described the decision by coach Tony Gustavsson. She has since played at the Paris Games, her third Olympics, and reached the 2026 Asian Cup final with Australia.

She signed for Portland Thorns in July 2024 on a deal running to the end of the 2026 season.
