Marcelo Alfonso Díaz Rojas

Marcelo Díaz came through the Universidad de Chile academy and made his first-team debut in 2005. A loan spell at Deportes La Serena in 2010 preceded his return to Universidad de Chile, where he won the Apertura in 2009 and 2011, the Clausura in 2011, the Apertura in 2012 and the Copa Sudamericana in 2011.

That run of success took him to Europe in 2012, when FC Basel paid around $4 million for him. In Switzerland he won four consecutive Super League titles between 2012 and 2016. He then moved to Hamburger SV in 2015, spent time at Celta de Vigo from 2016, and joined Pumas UNAM in Mexico in 2017.

A year later he signed for Racing Club in Argentina, where he added a Superliga Argentina title in 2018-19 and the Trofeo de Campeones in 2019 to his honours list. He later played for Libertad in Paraguay, winning the Torneo Apertura in 2022, before a spell at Audax Italiano in Chile in 2023 and a return to Universidad de Chile in 2024.

With the Chile national team, Díaz was part of the squads that won the Copa América in 2015 and the Copa América Centenario in 2016, and he was named to the Team of the Tournament for the 2015 edition.
