Rene, full name Carlos Renê de Sousa Ferreira, spent his early career largely out of the national spotlight, developing at EC São José in Rio Grande do Sul from 2022, where a full breakthrough into the first team came in August 2023. Across more than 40 appearances there he scored 13 goals and helped the club win the Copa Gaúcha in 2024, following that up with a runner-up finish in the Recopa Gaúcha in 2025.

A move to Associação Portuguesa de Desportos in São Paulo followed, and it was there that his form began to draw wider attention. He scored four goals in the 2026 Copa do Brasil and added two more in that year's Paulistão, numbers that made a step up to Série A a realistic prospect. Vitória moved for him, agreeing a fee of around one million euros for the Bahia club.

The transfer took an unusual route: Rene was loaned back to Portuguesa in late March 2026 before returning to Vitória at the end of June, with the permanent move only completing on 1 July. Since arriving at Vitória he has featured in 16 Série A matches, scoring twice and providing one assist across 1,117 minutes on the pitch, with two yellow cards to his name. It is a modest early return by senior standards, but it marks his first sustained run of Brazilian top-flight football after working his way up through the lower reaches of the domestic game.
