About the player
Rodolfo Cota's name is tied to León, where he spent eight years. It was there, in the Clausura 2022 campaign, that he went thirteen matches without conceding, saved three penalties across the season and finished with a plus-8.3 shot-stopping mark. He had already collected a Balón de Oro as Liga MX's best goalkeeper back in 2016/17, when he was on loan at Guadalajara, and a Guante de Oro for his form in the CONCACAF Champions League the following year.
Cota came through Pachuca's academy and made his senior debut there in 2007, but it took loan spells away from the club to establish himself. At Puebla he won the Copa MX; at Guadalajara, across three loan years, he collected a Liga MX title, two more domestic cups, a Supercopa and the CONCACAF Champions League. León made the move permanent in 2018, and he went on to lift a league title, a Leagues Cup and a CONCACAF Champions Cup there before joining Club América on loan in 2024, where he added an Apertura title and, in 2025, the Campeón de Campeones.
His international résumé is thinner. He earned eight caps for Mexico between 2017 and 2022, keeping four clean sheets, but mostly watched from the bench at major tournaments — an unused squad member at the 2017 Confederations Cup, the 2021 Gold Cup final and the 2022 World Cup. He is now at Club América on a permanent basis.
