About the player
Kunimoto came through FC NEO and the Urawa Red Diamonds youth system before starting his senior career at Avispa Fukuoka in 2015. A move to South Korea followed in January 2018, when he joined Gyeongnam FC, where he made 63 appearances and scored 7 goals in the K League 1.
He joined Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in January 2020. He won back-to-back K League 1 titles in 2020 and 2021, added the Korean FA Cup in both 2020 and 2022, and made 64 appearances for the club, scoring 10 goals. That run ended abruptly in July 2022, when his contract was terminated following a drunk-driving incident.
He rebuilt his career away from Korea, joining Casa Pia in Portugal in July 2022, where he made 24 appearances and scored once. In August 2023 he moved to Johor Darul Ta'zim in Malaysia, and picked up both the Malaysia Super League and Malaysia Cup that year. In February 2024, he signed for Liaoning Tieren, known as Shenyang Urban, on a free transfer, and helped the club win the China League One title in 2025, securing promotion to the Chinese Super League.
At youth level, Kunimoto earned 7 caps for Japan's U20 side and featured at the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup, though he has not been capped by the senior national team.
