About the player
Vladimir Mendes was still a teenager when Benfica came for him. He had spent two years in Belenenses's youth ranks after starting out at UD Ponte Frielas, and in July 2021, aged 16, he moved to Lisbon to join one of Portugal's biggest academies.
Born in Guinea-Bissau in June 2005, Mendes left Benfica B in the summer of 2026 for Botev Plovdiv, signing a contract that runs until 2029, wearing the number 82 shirt.
His early appearances for Botev Plovdiv have shown a player getting used to regular first-team football. He picked up a yellow card in the match against Cherno More, and has also featured against CSKA Sofia, Lokomotiv Sofia and Ludogorets.
Sources differ on where exactly he lines up in defence, but his path is clear enough — from a small Lisbon-area club through Benfica's development system to a starting role in Bulgaria within his first season.
