About the player
Yerko Leiva made his first-team debut for Universidad de Chile on 24 April 2016 and scored in that match, an unusual start for a midfielder still in his teens. He went on to spend six years at the club, through to 2022, and picked up a league title with Universidad de Chile in the 2017 Clausura.
His youth career had already carried him onto bigger stages before that: he played four matches and scored a goal at the 2015 Under-17 World Cup, then featured in four games at the 2017 South American Under-20 Championship. The senior national team called on him once, a substitute appearance against Burkina Faso on 2 June 2017, coming on in the 77th minute.
After Universidad de Chile, Leiva moved to Curicó Unido in 2022, a transfer completed after the club bought out his rights from Mexico's Necaxa. He made 88 appearances there, including two in the 2023 Copa Libertadores. A loan spell at O'Higgins in 2024 brought 18 games and a goal.
He returned to Curicó Unido before joining Unión La Calera, where he now wears the number 8 shirt.
