Yellow-Blacks came into being when the Major Junior Hockey League itself did, in 2009, as Severstal reorganised its youth side and put the new name to a fan vote; on 30 June that year the club became Almaz, a farm team built to feed players up to Severstal Cherepovets in the KHL. That purpose has shaped everything since: Pavel Buchnevich passed through between 2011 and 2014 before the New York Rangers drafted him and he went on to the NHL, and Mikhail Ilyin's route to a Pittsburgh Penguins selection in 2023 ran through the same dressing room.

On the ice, Almaz has had its moments without ever threatening to define itself by them. The Golden Division title in the Western Conference, won in 2011–12, came early in the club's life, and the deepest playoff run followed in 2016–17, when a bronze medal arrived after the semi-final was lost 1–3 to Reaktor. Home games are played at the Ice Palace, which holds 5,685.

Konstantin Kasatkin now runs the bench. Ahead of the 2026–27 season the club has refreshed its logo and jersey.
