The team was founded on 12 December 1912, and its more recent history has been a string of collapses and rebirths: bankruptcy forced new company names in 2009, 2010 and 2018, before the club settled back on the old identity, Unione Sportiva Avellino 1912.
None of that touches what the city actually remembers, which is a decade in Serie A. From 1978 to 1988, Avellino held its place in the top flight for ten straight seasons, finishing eighth in 1986–87, the highest the club has ever climbed. Around him played the Brazilian Dirceu, a three-time World Cup midfielder.
Below Serie A, the club's record is built almost entirely on Serie C: four titles there, in 1972–73, 2002–03 and 2012–13, plus a Serie D championship in 2018–19 that marked one more climb back from the bottom. Promotion to Serie B, when it has come, has more often arrived through the play-offs than as champions outright.
The Stadio Partenio-Adriano Lombardi holds 26,000, though safety restrictions have at times cut that capacity down to a fraction of the number.
