Benevento reached Serie A for the first time in the 2017-18 season, a campaign no club in Italy's top five leagues wants to remember: fourteen straight defeats to open the season, an eventual last-place finish. The promotion arrived through the play-offs of 2016-17, won from fifth place in the Serie B table.
The line from there to the present Benevento Calcio is not a straight one. Further mergers and reorganisations followed over the decades, and in 2005 the entity playing today, Benevento Calcio S.p.A., was formed after its predecessor collapsed under tax debts, starting again in the lower divisions.
Three Serie C titles have come the club's way, most recently in 2025-26, alongside a Serie C Super Cup the same year, and two Serie D titles going back to 1945-46. Matches are played at the Stadio Ciro Vigorito, which holds 16,867.
