Marta scored 122 goals in 214 appearances for Brazil, won the FIFA World Player of the Year award six times. The Seleção Feminina has never lifted the FIFA Women's World Cup, despite reaching the final in 2007 and third place in 1999, and that absence sits oddly beside nine Copa América Femenina titles won across nearly four decades, from 1991 through to 2025.

Formiga, who played 217 times for the national team over 26 years, was there for most of it.

The 2023 World Cup ended at the group stage, a result that pushed the federation toward Arthur Elias, who took the team through a tactical rebuild and, within a year, to the Olympic final in Paris, beating the reigning world champions Spain along the way before settling for silver — the team's third Olympic runner-up medal, after 2004 and 2008.

Brazil's players train at Granja Comary in Teresópolis, away from the cameras, but the big nights belong to the Maracanã, which now holds close to 79,000 people since its rebuild for the 2014 men's World Cup. It is there that Brazil will host the 2027 World Cup.
