Winnipeg is where the roster first took shape, on 1 July 1986, when the Canadian Soccer Association named the players who would carry the country's colours into a match. Canada has never settled on one ground since; the team moves between venues across the country, leaning most often on BMO Field in Toronto.

The rivalry with the United States has shaped the team's ambitions more than any single tournament, and for years the closest Canada came to matching it was silver: six runner-up finishes at the CONCACAF W Championship between 1991 and 2022, a run of near-misses that made the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 land as something the squad had been chasing for three decades. Bronze at the London and Rio Games had shown the team belonged among the contenders; Tokyo settled the question of whether it could finish the job.

No player is tied to that arc more than Christine Sinclair, who earned her first cap in 2000 and her last in 2023, finishing with 331 appearances and 190 goals for the national team. She was already established as captain by the time Canada hosted the 2015 World Cup and went out in the quarter-finals on home soil, a tournament that tested the squad in front of its own crowds before the Olympic breakthrough five years later.

Jessie Fleming now wears the captain's armband for a side still built around the standard Sinclair's generation set, with the next CONCACAF W Championship offering the clearest chance to turn one of those long-standing runner-up finishes into a title.
