Women's football in France carried a federal ban from 1941, and only when the French Football Federation lifted it in 1970 did a national side become possible at all. Les Bleues took the field for the first time on 17 April 1971, away to the Netherlands, in Hazebrouck.

The team plays in blue shirts and white shorts, the same palette as the men's side, and the nickname follows the same logic: Les Bleues, the feminine of Les Bleus. Home fixtures are staged at the Parc des Princes, which holds 47,929.

Training runs through the Pôle France féminine at Clairefontaine, based at INSEP in Paris since 2014. The programme has carried the team through the UEFA Women's Euro, the World Cup, the Olympics and, more recently, the UEFA Nations League.
