«Oranje Leeuwinnen»
Sherida Spitse has played 248 times for the Netherlands, more than anyone else to pull on the shirt. In 2017, on home soil, the Oranje Leeuwinnen beat Denmark 4-2 in the final to win the UEFA Women's Euro.
Before that breakthrough, the record was thinner: a run to the semi-finals and eventual third place at the 2009 Euro in Finland, behind Germany and England. Two years later, at the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France, the Netherlands reached the final itself, losing 2-0 to the United States. The 2023 World Cup brought a quarter-final exit to Spain, the eventual champion, in extra time, and the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 ended the same way a round earlier, beaten by the United States on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
The team trains at the KNVB Campus in Zeist, and the Oranje Leeuwinnen name — the lioness set against the orange of the House of Orange-Nassau — has carried it from an unofficial match against West Germany in 1956 through to the first officially recognised international in 1971, against France.
Vivianne Miedema leaves the deepest mark on the scoresheet, with 104 goals for the national side, more than any other player has managed in the orange shirt. Dominique Janssen wears the captain's armband now.
